Before Being Canceled, 'The Mick' Had Big Things Planned For Season 3

Crafting a hit show is tough to do, and networks never shy away from axing a series that they feel is no longer worth it. Some shows can survive cancellation, but typically, this is not the case. Shows can be cancelled for any number of reasons. Jupiter's Legacy cost too much, while The New Adventures of Old Christine had dwindling ratings.

Several years back, Fox launched The Mick, and for two seasons, fans were tuning in and enjoying each episode. Season three appeared to be right around the corner, but in the blink of an eye, Fox cancelled the show.

The folks making the series had big plans for season three, and we have the details below!

'The Mick' Had A Successful Launch

The Mick, which debuted on Fox back in 2017, was a show that the network was fully behind, and one that had a lot of potential.

According to Deadline, "Fox brass had been firmly behind The Mick from the get-go, launching the series, created by John and Dave Chernin, behind an NFL double-header on Sunday and then giving it another special Sunday airing behind The Simpsons‘ first-ever one-hour episode."

The networks' gamble on the show initially paid off, as millions tuned in to see the latest Fox offering. Of course, having It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Kaitlin Olson on board was a major plus.

Just a few episodes into its debut season, The Mick was renewed for its sophomore effort.

Season 2 would debut in 2017, and it lasted until April of 2018. There seemed to be a sense of belief that the show would be coming back for a third season, and the showrunners were preparing as such.

"Everybody was saying we were coming back, so we were pretty blindsided by that,” said John Chernin.

As the folks making the show would soon learn, they would, in fact, not be coming back for a third season.

'The Mick' Was Canceled After Two Seasons

After two seasons on the air, The Mick came to an untimely end, much to the disappointment of fans. Things seemed to be moving along well enough for the show, but a third season was simply not in the cards for the cast and the crew.

According to HitC, "The reason why The Mick was canceled has never been officially revealed by the show’s US network Fox but it is expected that poor viewing figures were behind the decision as is often the case in TV. After an impressive pilot episode, which raked in over 8.5 million viewers, and opening first season which averaged 2.96 million viewers, ratings tanked and by the end of season 2, just 1.8 million people were tuning in."

Cancellation is never fun to deal with, but Kaitlin Olson injected some levity into the situation when she took to her social media to show off items from the show to have "a yard sale to help pay the mortgage," according to Film and TV Now.

Due to the show's cancelation, fans did not get the chance to see any of the cool things that the folks making the show had on tap for season three.

Season 3 of 'The Mick' Had Some Big Plans

"The general plan was to catch up months after the accident. Sabrina was going to be pretty f--- up. We think [Black-D’Elia] is the most incredible actress, so we wanted to basically have Sabrina learn how to walk and talk again," revealed John Churnin.

Another idea involved Mickey and Sabrina having a wild night out when the latter was not in the mood to celebrate her birthday.

"Mickey wouldn’t be able to stand the thought of that, so she’d plop Sabrina into a wheelchair and take her out clubbing for the wildest night in Manhattan you could imagine. We always try to find a little bit of sweetness in a f–d-up situation," said Chernin.

Chernin also spoke of a potential love triangle featuring Alba, Mike, and the Yale grad she hooked up with.

"We laughed at the idea that Mike was going to find out about the other guy and go to his office and beat the s–t out of him in front of his co-workers."

The writers certainly seemed like they had a lot of great things in the works for the show, but alas, it simply wasn't meant to be.
