Franchise films, unlike solo releases, have a way of dominating the box office on a consistent basis. Some franchises, like the MCU and Star Wars, have unreal sustained success, while others spend a few movies on the big screen hauling in large amounts of money while cementing their legacy.
The Twilight franchise was a monumental success on the big screen, and it did a wonderful job of tapping into the built-in audience from the books. Rachelle Lefevre was cast as Victoria in the franchise, but she would find an untimely exit before her character finished her story arc.
So, why was Rachelle Lefevre replaced? Let’s take a look and see what happened.
With the buzz about Twilight coming to the big screen in full effect, actors were trying their best to land a prominent role in the franchise. For Rachelle Lefevre, the chance of a lifetime presented itself when she landed the role of Victoria. However, as we will soon see, things did not play out as expected for the performer.
Prior to landing the role of Victoria, Rachelle Lefevre was putting together work on the big and small screen. She had appeared in projects like Big Wolf on Campus, Charmed, and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, but it was Twilight that would ultimately change the game for the performer.
The first Twilight film was released back in 2008, and it took the box office by storm. The sequel to that film, New Moon, was another monumental success for the actress, and after years of putting in work, she had finally found her big break. The franchise was off and rolling, but just as things were really heating up for Lefevre, she would soon find herself expelled from the franchise before her character got a conclusion to her storyline.
Recastings are nothing new in Hollywood, but this does not mean that they still can’t be jarring. Fans were stunned to see that the role of Victoria had been recast in the film, Eclipse. Clearly, something had taken place, and Lefevre would open up in an interview about her side of things.
Lefevre would say, “I was stunned by Summit's decision to recast the role of Victoria for Eclipse. I was fully committed to the Twilight saga, and to the portrayal of Victoria. I turned down several other film opportunities and, in accordance with my contractual rights, accepted only roles that would involve very short shooting schedules. My commitment to Barney's Version [a 2010 comedy-drama starring Dustin Hoffman and Paul Giamatti] is only ten days.”
“Summit picked up my option for Eclipse. Although the production schedule for Eclipse is over three months long, Summit said they had a conflict during those ten days and would not accommodate me. Given the length of filming for Eclipse, never did I fathom I would lose the role over a ten day overlap,” she continued.
Despite telling the studio about her plans to take part in another project, the actress found herself booted from the franchise. However, the studio would not sit idly by and not give their side of things, which paints a different picture about what took place behind the scenes.
In a statement, Summit, the studio behind the saga, gave their account of things and why they decided to part ways with Lefevre.
“Contrary to Ms. Lefevre's statement, it is simply untrue that the Studio dismissed her over a ten day overlap. It is not about a ten day overlap, but instead about the fact that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is an ensemble production that has to accommodate the schedules of numerous actors while respecting the established creative vision of the filmmaker and most importantly the story,” the studio said.
With the role of Victoria needing to be filled, the studio soon hired Bryce Dallas Howard to play the character. She brought something different to the role, and fans have certainly expressed their feelings about the swap in perform for Victoria. Nevertheless, Howard would appear in a total of two Twilight films, just like Lefevre, and she left her stamp on the franchise.
Since her departure from the franchise, Rachelle Lefevre has remained busy in film and on television. While she has found success, we can’t help but wonder how things would have turned out if she had been able to finish her time as Victoria without any conflict with the studio.
Despite landing the role of a lifetime, things wound up taking a turn for the worst for Rachelle Lefevre.
